Avinyó ‘Vi D'Agulla’ Muscat Penedès, Spain 2007 The Esteve family has made natural wines in the Penedès region of Spain's Catalonia for over 50 years. They recently acquired a 3-hectare, high elevation vineyard and have started a playful new project called Vi D'Agulla. The name refers to the prickle of slight effervescence and it is made from organically farmed Petit Grain Muscat, fermented and aged with no oak. The result is a wine of real crispness that is light bodied and refreshingly low in alcohol (just 10.5%). It shows honeysuckle aromas with racy citrus and apple flavors and chalky minerality. This is a perfect wine for a picnic.

Domaine de Durban Vin de Pays du Vaucluse Blanc, France 2008 Domaine de Durban, located in the pretty village of Beaume-de-Venise, is famous for their delicately sweet muscat. It was founded in 1159 on a hillside plateau overlooking the village and since the 1960's has been nurtured by the Leydier family. One of our favorite importers, Kermit Lynch, works with this producer to make this concrete tank fermented special cuvèe of 50% Viognier and 50% Chardonnay. Because the blend of grapes in this wine is not classic to the southern Rhône, this wine bears the Vin de Pays appellation. It has fruity and exotic aromas of peach and flower and is crisp and juicy. Try it with grilled fish dishes.

Charles and Charles Rosé of Syrah, Talcott Vineyard, Columbia Valley, Washington 2008 Charles Bieler (of Three Thieves / Rebel Wine Co. / BIELER Père et Fils) has been making rosé in Provence with his family since 1992, while Charles Smith (of K Vintners, Magnificent Wine Co. / Charles Smith Wines) has been producing Rhône varietals in the moderate climates of Washington's Columbia Valley and Walla Walla Valley. While many US rosé producers favor creating big, rich, dark rosés in the saignée method, Bieler and Smith feel compelled to make their rosé refreshing enough to be drunk on a hot summer's day. Their syrah grapes are picked early, sent straight to press without any cold soak, and are fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures. This single vineyard rosé delivers a dry wine with berry, citrus and pepper character. Rosés pair with most everything, but really shine in the sun.

Weingut Schäfer Pinot Noir ‘Classic’, Rheinhessen, Germany 2007 The Schäfer family has been making wine in the Rheinhessen of southern Germany since 1709. Their family philosophy is to construct wines with love, using the utmost care while offering quality wines at competitive prices. Pinot Noir grows famously well in cooler climates like the Rheinhessen. The Schäfer's pinot is primarily grown in the Mettenheim Schlossberg vineyard. This vineyard lies on loess (porous sedimentary deposits) of loam (sand, silt, and clay) from the Rhine River. The wine is charmingly light bodied and soft. It offers red fruit and earth. Pair it with mushroom and fish dishes that are full in flavor and texture.

Château de Gaudou ‘Tradition’ Cahors, France 2006 At this 17th century château in Cahors in southwest France, winemaker Fabric Durou focuses on "freshness rather than power and weight" when creating the cuvée 'Tradition.' The blend has been made here for centuries; it is a composition of 80% Merlot, 15% Malbec, and 5% Tannat that is aged in both stainless steel and 20 year old French barrels. On the palate, it shows dark berry fruits with herbs and sarsaparilla. Medium bodied, the tannins are soft and well balanced. This is made to go with hearty casseroles of vegetables, mushroom, chestnuts, duck, and chicken.

Cortenova Primitivo Puglia, Italy 2008 Primitivo is the Italian clone of the American Zinfandel. The winery Cortenova is sourcing grapes from the sun-kissed, rust colored earth of Salento, in the southernmost part of Puglia. The juice is fermented on the skins for 10-12 days creating a dark wine with a fragrant black fruit bouquet. It is of medium acidity with structured and plush tannins. This is a food-friendly red that matches with barbecues as well as spicy pastas, pizzas and calzones.
